SPECIAL EVENTS -

05/10/2013: On 18th October 1924, the first radio communication contact between
the UK and New Zealand took place between 2SZ at Mill Hill School, the station
operated by Cecil Goyder, and 4AA in Shag Valley, South Island, New Zealand,
operated by Frank Bell. The Radio Society of Great Britain, in partnership with
groups of UK Amateurs in the UK and New Zealand, invites participation in
celebration of the 90th anniversary of this event in October 2014 by recreating
that original contact between the UK and New Zealand on the 80m band. For 2013,
there will be activity preparing for the celebrations in 2014 and the special
call GB2NZ will be active to stimulate the interest in celebrating the event
from 5th to 25th October 2013. It is suggested that those with suitably equipped
stations might like to join in the "dry run" tests in October 2013 on 80m.
Others may like to make contacts with New Zealand amateurs on the HF bands.
Contacts on both CW and SSB are encouraged and GB2NZ will be active on both
modes, on 80m when there is propagation but otherwise on other HF bands.
Elsewhere on this website (gb2nz.com/), you will find predicted propagation
between the UK and New Zealand for 18th October 2013. Either side of this date,
the propagation will generally follow the same pattern.
05/10/2013: Look for special event station 8J6BAL to be active on all bands and
modes between 5 October and 4 November 2013 to celebrate the 2013 Saga
International Balloon Fiesta that will be held between 31 October and 4 November
2013 at Kase Riversite, Saga city (JCC 4101, JCG 41004), Saga prefecture, Kyushu
region, island of Kyushu (AS-077, WLOTA 0963), Japan. QSL via the bureau.
Information about the International Balloon Fiesta can be found at:
www.sibf.jp/e/ [JJ1WTL/AC6IM]
06/10/2013: The Chorley and District Amateur Radio Society are running special
event callsign GB1LCT from Leyland, Lancashire, England (WAB SD52). The station
is being run as a tribute to the men and women who built the Centurion tanks in
the old Leyland motors factory from the 1940's through to the early 1950's. The
tank is mounted on a plinth at the entrance to Leyland and the operators will be
alongside the tank, so operations are very weather dependant. The call is on the
air from 6-31 of October. QSL info - please do not send them your card. They
will automatically send a QSL card via the RSGB bureau. Direct is fine with SAE
to Pam, 2E1HQY QTHr. [Southgate ARC]
